WHAT'S HAPPENING IN TRAVEL & TOURISM

President's Message

Hello everyone:

As you read this, news reports and images out of Jamaica are depicting the devastating and destructive impact of a direct hit from Hurricane Melissa, which has also affected other countries across the Caribbean community including Cuba, Haiti, The Bahamas and the Dominican Republic. Before anything else, our collective thoughts and prayers are with the people of the Caribbean – and with all our friends and neighbors here in South Florida who have deep and personal ties to the region.

In the coming days, there will be numerous relief and support efforts to consider. One immediate opportunity is through one of our local agencies, Global Empowerment Mission (GEM). Not so ironically now, we were already planning to feature GEM at the GMCVB’s annual meeting next Thursday for its important work in disaster relief. GEM is already mobilizing support by assembling personal aid kits – among other essential supplies – to be shipped along with generators and tenting.

We’re providing a link on the following page to learn more about GEM and how you can help – either by donating or volunteering to support their ongoing efforts. The GMCVB will also be contributing directly through proceeds from our annual meeting, where GEM representatives will join us in person.
