Call Me Dancer
 
Unleash your inner dancer and celebrate the pursuit of your dreams with a free event hosted by the Department of Access, Compliance, and Equal Opportunity at Florida International University on April 5. This dance-focused afternoon begins with a complimentary dance workshop, followed by a screening of the documentary Call Me Dancer. The film chronicles the journey of Manish, a talented street dancer from Mumbai, as he defies cultural norms and financial constraints to pursue his dream of becoming a professional dancer. Out in the Tropics Festival
 
Discover a captivating array of unconventional performances at FUNDarte's Out in the Tropics Festival (OITT), a month-long festival showcasing a diverse range of LGBTQ artists. Now in its 13th edition, the festival presents a thought-provoking program delving into themes of gender politics, sexuality, and LGBTQ identity. This year's lineup pushes artistic boundaries with creators who seamlessly blend dance, theater, music, literature, and performance art. Operation Moses
 
Delve into the history and significance of Operation Moses, a transformative moment in the journey of the Ethiopian Jewish community, at the Jewish Museum of Florida-Florida International University on April 8. The evening commences with opening remarks by Deputy Consul General Mike Driquez of the Consulate General of Israel in Miami. This event explores the daring rescue of more than 10,000 Ethiopian Jews (Beta Israel) from famine and civil unrest in 1984. Engage in a distinguished panel discussion. Listen to firsthand narratives and gain insights into the Ethiopian Jewish community. The program also features an exhibition with artifacts and photographs that vividly portray this extraordinary rescue operation. Two of the panelists are also featured artists in the exhibition. I'm The Boss of My Life Youth Conference
 
Join us on April 10 at the Florida International University Kovens Conference Center for a day of growth, learning, and empowerment!  The Overtown Children and Youth Coalition is proud to announce the fifth annual I'm the Boss of My Life Youth Conference. Open Air Tango #OnLincoln Road
 
Milonga, a music and dance style originating from Argentina, Uruguay, and Southern Brazil, takes its name from an African term meaning "lines of dancers." A monthly outdoor Milonga is held every 2nd Wednesday of the month in the vibrant heart of Lincoln Road. Open Air Tango #onLincoln was conceived with the aim of establishing a distinctive cultural event that engages both the local community and the many visitors who frequent the area. Because You Lived
 
Enter the profound and moving realm of Because You Lived, an exhibition curated by Karla Kantorovich. Serving as a poignant tribute, the exhibition honors the extraordinary life of Fanny Waseman, Karla's grandmother and the sole Holocaust survivor in her family. At just fifteen years old, Fanny embarked on a journey to Mexico City, where she courageously forged a new path and now boasts 63 descendants. This heartfelt showcase celebrates Fanny's resilience and the enduring legacy of her survival, prompting visitors to contemplate the unwavering human spirit amidst unimaginable challenges. MENA Festival
 
Immerse yourself in Opa-Locka's rich tapestry of cultures at the inaugural MENA Fest, the first multicultural festival of its kind in the city's 97-year history. This event pays tribute to the remarkable history of Opa-locka and its connection to the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regions. Books & Books cordially invites you to Family Day on Aragon: Storytime with Sita Singh on  April 13. This family-friendly event, free of charge, will showcase Sita Singh as she reads from her latest children's book, Mango Memories. Family Day at Aragon occurs every second Saturday of the month and is a collaborative effort with the Coral Gables Museum and the Coral Gables Art Cinema. This initiative is made possible through a grant from the Coral Gables Community Foundation and sponsorship by Grove Bank & Trust. Join us on April 13 to commemorate the 42nd Annual Baynanza Biscayne Bay Cleanup Day, an event dedicated to honoring our remarkable marine resources and contributing to the restoration of the Biscayne Bay watershed at more than 30 locations throughout Miami-Dade County. Baynanza serves as a tribute to Biscayne Bay and recognizes its crucial role as one of South Florida's vital ecological systems. Jews and India
 
Discover the vibrant history of Jewish communities in India at the Jewish Museum of Florida-Florida International University. Join Professor Nathan Katz for his lecture titled Jews and India on April 15. This presentation delves into the captivating narrative of Jewish presence in India spanning over two millennia. Professor Katz will explore the intricate relationships these communities forged with their Hindu neighbors, and the reciprocal influences on each other's cultures. The lecture will delve into the ways individual Jews left their mark on Indian religious practices, commercial ethics, and even influenced the decisions of Mughal emperors. 63rd Anniversary of the Bay of Pigs Invasion
 
We cordially invite you to honor the memory of the Cuban martyrs on this 63rd Anniversary of the Bay of Pigs Invasion on April 17 at the Cuban Memorial Boulevard Park. On that day in 1961, Brigade 2506, the CIA-sponsored group of Cuban exiles tried to overthrow Fidel Castro from power. The mission failed, but their legacy lives on. Miami Sephardic Club: The Mimouna Party
 
Welcome to the third annual Mimouna Party, the largest in the entire United States, hosted by the Miami Sephardic Club! For those unfamiliar, Mimouna is a cherished Moroccan tradition observed by Jewish communities. This festive occasion commences after nightfall on the final day of Passover. Families traditionally open their homes to guests, offering a sumptuous array of holiday cakes and sweets, creating a joyful atmosphere filled with music and camaraderie. As Black History is American History, it is vital to tell the critical stories of struggle and triumph in South Florida. Virginia Key Beach Park Trust (VKBPT) is so proud to announce that our 75th Anniversary Documentary on an “Emerging Black Miami” is nominated for an Emmy Award.  Huge Kudos to the small but mighty VKBPT team who worked diligently on this project to share this inspiring and important Miami multi-cultural history every day and to our donors who funded this project. Vizcaya Museum and Gardens Features Podcast Honoring Black Coconut Grove
 
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens has partnered with local matriarchs to produce a podcast highlighting the history and accomplishments of Coconut Grove’s Black community. Titled “The Rich and Forgotten History of Black Coconut Grove,” this three-episode series features stories from legacy residents of the neighborhood’s establishment and through their life experiences from the 1930s to the modern day. Vizcaya Volunteer Information Session
 
If you have an interest in arts, culture, innovation, and connecting with people, consider becoming a Vizcaya Volunteer Greeter. They are exposed to the inner workings of this National Historic Landmark and contribute to the experience of more than 300,000 people each year. Theater with Deep Roots in Black Community Will Get its Voice Again
 
In case you haven't heard, Coconut Grove's Ace Theater, which was built in the 1930s and was the heart of the Grove’s Black community during the Jim Crow era, will be restored and reopened thanks to a National Park Service grant.  The Nationoal Park Service, in a new program aimed at preserving sites related to the country’s equal-rights battles, awarded $398K to the Ace Theater.
