Miami-Dade County Asian American Advisory Board Community Recognition Gala
 
The Asian American Advisory Board (AAAB) invites you to their Community Recognition Gala in Celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the AAAB. To commemorate their achievements over this time, they will be holding a community recognition dinner event on June 10 at the Coral Gables Golf & Country Club. Proceeds from the dinner will benefit Florida International University (FIU) First Generation Scholarship, which will help FIU students who are the first generation in their families to pursue a college degree. Ayitï Pap Peri Haitï: Imperishable
 
Please join the North Miami Community Redevelopment Agency and collaborators for the closing reception of Ayitï Pap Peri Haitï: Imperishable, a Haitian Heritage Month installation.  It takes place on  June 2 at the Scott Galvin Community Center. An artwork auction, benefitting education in Hait with Prodev Haiti, will be hosted by Chokarella's Carel Pedre. All of the art pieces will be sold. Black Affairs Advisory Board: Annual Community Pillars & Young Pillars Scholarship Awards
 
The Black Affairs Advisory Board’s Heritage Planning Committee invites you to its annual Community Pillar awards and Young Pillar scholarship presentation on June 3 at the Miami Biscayne Bay Marriott. The ceremony will honor Black business leaders for their contribution to Miami’s economy and for paving the way for a younger generation of leaders.  In alignment with the mission of the Pillar Awards, some of the current Black Hospitality Initiative students will be recognized during the program..  Learn more here.
 
          
 
Bahamian Heritage Celebration with the Miami Marlins
 
Join us for our Bahamian Appreciation Celebration at loanDepot park on June 3. Make some noise and represent as the Marlins take on the Oakland Athletics. Wynwood Pride
 
June marks Pride Month, and one of Miami’s biggest parties during 2023 will be along the painted streets of Wynwood on June 3-10. Now in its fifth year, the celebration brought more than 135 artists and 50,000 attendees in its inaugural year and has grown every year since. While only a few key events for 2023 have been announced thus far, you can stay tuned to Wynwood Pride’s website for exciting announcements about more musical performances, drag shows and rollicking good times.
 
          
 
Bahas Reunion 2023
 
The Bahas Reunion is here to reunite everyone young or old that grew up in the Bahas by celebrating Black Music Month and enjoying each other by having an annual picnic in the park. Enjoy entertainment, games, splash pad for the kids, and lunch featuring hot dogs and hamburgers. Presented by Miami Gardens Mayor Rodney Harris and Councilwoman Shannon Campbell, this event will take place on June 4 at Buccaneer Park. All attending guest must register here.
 
          
 
Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami Sunday Stories: Ho'onani, Hula Warrior
 
Join the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA),  as it celebrates Pride Month by learning about identity roles and Hawaiian culture by reading Ho’onani: Hula Warrior by Heather Gale. After the storytelling, children will engage in a hands-on lei-making activity, an artistic extension of the story that fosters creativity and mirrors the Hawaiian tradition of crafting lei as symbols of love, respect and hospitality. Join the Overtown Community Fellows as they host their Community Activation Project, Voices of Overtown. The event will take place at Dorsey Park, on June 3. The Voices of Overtown project aims to improve the interconnectivity between the historical organizations of Overtown and the community's youth. Visakhabucha Day Ceremony
 
Visakhabucha Day is a full moon day in the sixth lunar month. It is considered the most important day in Buddhism because it combines three important days of the Buddha‘s life. These days are the Day of Birth, the Enlightenment Day, and the Day of Death. This year the full moon day in the sixth lunar month is June 3rd. Summer Shorts: Homegrown Edition
 
Summer Shorts: Homegrown Edition is presented by City Theatre and Adrienne Arsht Center with performances June 8-25. Eight short plays by Miami's hottest new playwrights. The Moth StorySLAM: Pride
 
Fantasy Theatre Factory is thrilled to welcome The Miami MOTH to it's StorySLAM home at the beautiful Sandrell Rivers Theater on June 8!  The Moth StorySLAM is a community-focused, open-mic storytelling competition in which anyone can share a five-minute story on the night’s theme.  305 Exchange
 
We are excited to announce that the Allapattah Community Fellows Cohort Five will host its Community Activation Project 305 Exchange on June 10 at Juan Pablo Duarte Park. The  305 Exchange project aims to promote the creation of a Cultural Center in the Allapattah neighborhood. Celebrating Caribbean Heritage Month, this event will have a drum-making workshop, food, fun, music, and activities for the entire family. Learn more and RSVP here.
 
                      
 
Miami Bahamas Goombay Festival
 
Celebrate the Grove's Bahamian heritage  and the Bahamas 50th anniversary of independence with two days of festivities, June 10-11. For this year's edition, Goombay returms to Coconut Grove's main thoroughfare, Grand Avenue. Enjoy live entertainment, delicious food, local vendors, a Junkanoo rush, and more. The Eternal Night (La Noche Eterna)
 
On June 11, join the Florida International University  Cuban Research Institute for a discussion and screening of The Eternal Night (La Noche Eterna), a feature-length film that tells the story of three young Cuban men who were condemned for their beliefs and their creations. The film is based on the true story of Cuban writer and former political prisoner Néstor Díaz de Villegas. The film is in Spanish with English subtitles and the discussion will be held in English and Spanish. Registration is required.
 
                      
 
Connecting Florida: Sawgrass Reflections with Cesar Becerra
 
Join us on June 12 for a lively discussion about the River of Grass and its historical and ongoing effects on everyone in Florida. There are many stories about the Everglades. Historian Cesar Becerra strives to tell them all. So passionate that the Miami Herald named him an Everglades Evangelist. He has been collecting, researching, and contributing to the mountain of academia that, ironically, exists for a place that looks at times like a simple field of grass. Event will take place at the Miami Dade College Koubek Memorial Center.
 
                      
 
Smorgasburg Miami to Extend Their Stay on the Lincoln Road District in Miami Beach Through the End of the Year
 
Delicious news! Smorgasburg Miami, Miami’s largest outdoor-food market will extend their stay on Lincoln Road and continue operating the weekly Friday night market, ‘Smorgasburg Miami on Lincoln Road.’    After overwhelming support the Lincoln Road Business Improvement District (BID) has decided to invite Smorgasburg Miami to continue hosting a weekly market every Friday in the Lincoln Road District, featuring a lineup of best-in-class vendors through the end of the year. Benito Juárez Bust Unveiling
 
Join the City of Miami Beach in accepting a Benito Juarez bust from the Consulate General of Mexico in Miami, in collaboration with the Hispanic Affias Committee. President Benito Juárez was one of Mexico's most iconic leaders and the man who the city of Juárez is named after. Sounds of Little Haiti
 
Join us at this incredible live outdoor konpa extravaganza. Sounds of Little Haiti is back at it again and ready to serve up some of Haiti's most talented artists. Performing live for the first  time on the Little Haiti Cultural Center, Strings. The band is known for its universal appeal. Come and enjoy the unique sounds of Strings' Spanish guitar and Haitian rhythms. Also hittting the stage is Rutshelle Guillaume, the talented Haitian singer and songwriter who has been making waves in the music industry for over a decade. Her unique voice and captivating performances, has established her as one of the leading voices in Haitian music, earning accolades and a devoted fanbase along the way. 
 
                      
 
Artwalk Presents Richmond Heights Juneteenth Celebration
 
On June 16, join us for a cultural experience at the Richmond Heights Juneteenth Celebration. Discover the history of this thriving African American community in South Dade. Richmond Heights grew after World War II as a neighborhood for African American veterans seeking affordable housing. Enjoy live music, DJ performances, Black art and activities for all ages. Juneteenth 2023: Appreciating Our Community's Roots
 
Masjid Al-Ansar invites you to celebrate Juneteenth with them the weekend of June 16-18 . This mosque is nestled in a church building bought by Muslims in 1968.  It is one of the oldest mosques in South Florida, it serves as a religious center for the Islamic community. This Juneteenth celebration includes workshops for all ages and activities for children. Visit vendors at the New Africa Market Place. View a pioneer exhibit. Trinidadian Steel Pan Music
 
Join HistoryMiami Museum at the panyard, the home and rehearsal space of steel drum ensemble, 21st Century Steel Band! Immerse yourself in the world of Trinidadian steel pan music and tour the space where these instruments are not only played but made. Pan maker and band director Michael Kernahan will demonstrate the process of making pans, which are expertly crafted from oil drums. American Black Film Festival Community Day
 
The 2023 American Black Film Festival (ABFF) will close out its five-day event with the annual Community Day taking place on June 18, at the Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater. The ABFF and the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau bring Hollywood talent to Miami for this event. The program features two special Max series screenings from actress/producer Issa Rae and Oscar-winning director Matthew A. Cherry. Live at Knight - Pride Anthems
 
Join us at the Knight Concert Hall on June 18 to celebrate Pride Month with a journey through the past fifty years of Pride anthems. The story of the fight for LGBTQ+ equality is linked to this music, which evokes the struggles, heartache and liberation of queer lives then and now. Visages of Memory - Honoring Holocaust Survivors and Preserving Their Memories
 
The Holocaust was one of the darkest chapters in human history that claimed the lives of six million Jews and countless others. The exhibit Visages of Memory - Honoring Holocaust Survivors and Preserving Their Memories, at the Kislak Center at the University of Miami, presents portraits of South Florida Holocaust survivors alongside their memoirs. Photographer Laszlo Selly, a Holocaust survivor himself, captured the visages of fellow survivors as seen through his unique lens of solidarity and understanding. Each of Selly’s portraits is accompanied by a short account of the survivor’s personal and inspiring story written by Bobbi Kaufman. Exhibition is on display until July 21.

Miami Dade College Receives $500,000 Grant
 
Miami Dade College has been awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant in the amount of $500,000 to help renovate its National Historic Landmark Freedom Tower, coined the Ellis Island of the South, located in the heart of Downtown Miami.  The grant is part of NEH’s $28.1 million effort to support innovative projects that use digital tools and technology to further humanities research and increase the accessibility of public programs, cultural and archival materials, and educational resources for large audiences.

As Black History is American History, it is vital to tell the critical stories of struggle and triumph in South Florida. Virginia Key Beach Park Trust (VKBPT) is so proud to announce that our 75th Anniversary Documentary on an “Emerging Black Miami” is nominated for an Emmy Award.  Huge Kudos to the small but mighty VKBPT team who worked diligently on this project to share this inspiring and important Miami multi-cultural history every day and to our donors who funded this project. Vizcaya Museum and Gardens Features Podcast Honoring Black Coconut Grove
 
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens has partnered with local matriarchs to produce a podcast highlighting the history and accomplishments of Coconut Grove’s Black community. Titled “The Rich and Forgotten History of Black Coconut Grove,” this three-episode series features stories from legacy residents of the neighborhood’s establishment and through their life experiences from the 1930s to the modern day. They are exposed to the inner workings of this National Historic Landmark and contribute to the experience of more than 300,000 people each year. Theater with Deep Roots in Black Community Will Get its Voice Again
 
In case you haven't heard, Coconut Grove's Ace Theater, which was built in the 1930s and was the heart of the Grove’s Black community during the Jim Crow era, will be restored and reopened thanks to a National Park Service grant.  The Nationoal Park Service, in a new program aimed at preserving sites related to the country’s equal-rights battles, awarded $398K to the Ace Theater.
