Miami-Dade County Commissioner Marleine Bastien is inviting the community to experience the magic of Haitian culture, art, music and food by participating in the annual celebration of Haitian Heritage Cultural Month during the month of May. Highlights of this year’s celebrations include Commissioner Bastiein's Haitian Heritage Cultural Month opening reception, Little Haiti Book Festival, Sounds of Little Haiti and much more. Live on the Plaza:  Cortadito
 
On May 3, join us on the Thomson Plaza for the Arts to listen to the amazing sounds of Cortadito.  For over a decade, Cortadito has become a torchbearer of a phenomenon that is two centuries’ strong. A traditional folk and acoustic band that focuses on performing son (pronounced “sown”), one of the earliest styles of Cuban country music. With their many interpretations of traditional and original songs, this dynamic ensemble will guide you through an audio experience like no other.

In Celebration of Haitian Heritage Month Hilton Hotel Features Annick Duvivier
 
In celebration of Haitian Heritage Month, the Hilton Miami Airport Blue Lagoon invites you to an artist meet and greet on May 4.  Meet Haitian-Born, Miami-based visual artist Annick Duvivier. Her art exhibition Closer to Nature is on display in the lobby of the hotel. Annick is known for her mixed media collage painting.  She is currently creating artwork in her studio for her upcoming shows at the end of the year. Follow her journey on Instagram. Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Kick-Off Celebration
 
The  Asian American Advisory Board will host their annual Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Kick-Off Celebration on May 5 at the Stephen P. Clark Government Center Lobby starting at noon. Come celebrate the significant contributions made by Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to the development of the arts, sciences, government, military, commerce, and education in the United States. On this day, there will be cultural performances and performers representing many parts of the beautiful Asian countries.
 
                      
 
Pérez Art Museum Miami:  Haitian Heritage Month Kickoff
 
Join Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) in kicking off Haitian Heritage Month! Enjoy a live DJ celebrating the diverse music of Haiti including rara, Creole hip-hop, compa, and afrobeat. The Sunshine Jazz monthly concert series continues with a fabulous new addition to their South Florida Jazz treasure chest!  NYC native LeNora Jaye grew up in a musical household.  Her career started as a featured vocalist for funk-rock band Rhythm Republic. The Derby Social
 
SocialXchange invites you, to Wynwood on May 6, for the The Derby Social to celebrate the 149th Kentucky Derby Race! This unique and exclusive South Florida Derby Experience celebrates the untold Black History of the Kentucky Derby. Black jockeys and horsemen dominated the sport of thoroughbred racing, from the first Kentucky Derby in 1875 through 1903, right before the Jim Crow era pushed them out. La Fille mal Gardée
 
Cuban Classical Ballet of Miami brings the fun, comedic ballet La Fille Mal Gardée to the Miami-Dade County Auditorium stage on May 6 and 7. This acclaimed ballet celebrates the pastoral life of 18th Century France - where love triumphed wealth. In the story, the mother of a precocious girl named Lise keeps her at home in hopes she'll marry the son of a wealthy businessman. Stubborn Lise, however, is in love with Colas, a boy with very little means.
 
                      
 
Haitian Heritage Museum Exhibit:  Nostalgia Primitive D'Haiti
 
Come to the Haitian Heritage Museum, a space in the Miami Design District dedicated to preserving and promoting Haitian culture, history and art.  In recognition of Haitian Heritage Month, the museum presents Nostalgia Primitive D'Haiti, showcasing works of art that depicts sentimental moments experienced by Haitians. Browse through the expressive paintings as you learn more about the African roots of Haitians, the challenges its people have faced for centuries, and the symbolism of strength throughout Haitian art.  The exhibition runs from May 6 to November 18.

Lady Liberty: A Bonnie Lautenberg Retrospective
 
Don't miss the Lady Liberty exhibit at the Jewish Museum of Florida before it closes on May 14. Silent Spikes: Following in the Footprints of Chinese Railroad Workers
 
Come to the Westchester Regional Library on May 20 for the kickoff event for the Silent Spikes: Following in the Footprints of Chinese Railroad Workers exhibit.  This exhibit honors Chinese railroad workers who helped build the Central Pacific western portion of the Transcontinental Railroad. Their story is told through historical images and contemporary photos from a variety of sources. Miami Children's Museum invites you to celebrate our Asian American and Pacific Islander friends on May 20-21 with a full day of fun! They will have special story times by their Theater Troupe.  Performances, and arts and crafts showcasing a variety of cultures across the Asian continent and the Pacific. The 25th edition of the Haitian Compas Festival is moving back to Bayfront Park.  Don’t miss this festival, where Haitian music, dance, food and art meld together for an immersive cultural experience.  Enjoy performances by popular Haitian and Haitian-American musicians and artists, including KAÏ, Nu Look, T-Vice, Kodak Black and more. Collective Voices: Online Community Archives on Cuba and Its Diaspora
 
Join the Cuban Heritage Collection and the Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship for Diversity, Inclusion & Cultural Heritage at Rare Book School for a virtual panel discussion with community archivists working to document the diverse experiences of Cuba and its diaspora. Speakers will discuss their efforts to preserve the experiences of LGBTQ and Afro-Cuban communities, as well as documentation of post-revolution material culture on the island. Nestled in the heart of North Miami Beach is The Ancient Spanish Monastery, an architectural oasis brought from Spain. The Cloisters will serve as the perfect stage to enjoy  Latin Grammy nominee world music band Gaêlica. Gaêlica is a Folk/Pop band that mixes Celtic music with Latin, Arabic, and Irish hints, passing through Flamenco, Tango, and Afro-Venezuelan beats, flavors that demonstrate their multicultural influences. Artwalk Presents Art in the Park 
 
Councilwoman Jenifer N. Bailey, the Southwest Advisory Committee & the City of Homestead invite you to Artwalk Presents Art in the Park. Each year they celebrate a different art form and this, being their sixth year, will encompass all forms of art. This one-day community event will feature interactive art activities led by professional artists, dance and musical performances, live art and more. Haitian Heritage Month Comedy Show
 
The City of North Miami invites you to celebrate Haitian Heritage Month with good laughs and entertainment with Success Jr. and friends.  Success St. Fleur, Jr., better known as simply Success Jr., was born in Miami and is now an Atlanta-based comedian, producer, actor, and writer. He is  most known for creating short videos online portraying his mother (Mama Junior) and his upbringing in an old-school, strong, religious, Haitian-Caribbean household. The fun takes place at North Miami Senior High School on May 26.
 
                      
 
Hyundai Air & Sea Show
 
On Memorial Day weekend, all eyes will be fixed on the sky above the Atlantic Ocean for the annual Hyundai Air & Sea Show in Miami Beach. This patriotic, family-friendly event on May 27-28 showcases the men, women, technology and equipment from all six branches of the United States Military as well as our police, firefighters and their first responder agencies. Their well-honed skills will be displayed in exhilarating feats, from jets screeching through the sky to powerboat racing and other extreme watersports. Attendees can also enjoy musical performances and flight and navigation simulators along Ocean Drive. Afro Nation Miami 2023
 
Uniting the diaspora with brilliant music and breathtaking spectacle, Afro Nation is the world’s biggest showcase for one of the fastest growing genres on the planet. Following successful festivals in Africa, Europe, and the Caribbean, Afro Nation takes the next step with Afro Nation Miami 2023, its first festival in the continental USA.  The festival  highlights the best in Afrobeats, dancehall, hip-hop, amapiano, and other Black-led musical genres.  Afro Nation Miami touches down at LoanDepot Park on May 27-28.
 
          
 
Visakhabucha Day Ceremony
 
Visakhabucha Day is a full moon day in the sixth lunar month. It is considered the most important day in Buddhism because it combines three important days of the Buddha‘s life. These days are the Day of Birth, the Enlightenment Day, and the Day of Death. This year the full moon day in the sixth lunar month is June 3rd. Ancestor - Kiro Urdin
 
The African Heritage Cultural Arts Center hosted an Artist Talk and reception with Macedonian artist and filmmaker Kiro Urdin; in collaboration with Kloser Contemporary Art and El Espacio 23. Urdin is an award-winning multi-media artist. The exhibit is open to the public through May 31.

Willy Chirino:  50 Years of Music
 
Join us in celebrating one of Miami’s music icons—Willy Chirino.  Recognizing the life and career of the legendary singer-songwriter, this exhibition documents a career spanning five decades through a collection of his awards, concert attire, photos, videos, and personal items.  Exhibit will runs through September 23 at the HistoryMiami Museum. Haitian Folklore Dance Classes
