Gloria Estefan Becoming the First Hispanic Woman in the Songwriters Hall of Fame
 
Miami's own Gloria Estefan is making history by becoming the first Hispanic woman to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. The Cuban-American singer-songwriter topped international charts in the 1980s and ’90s with her large repertoire of Latin crossover pop, which includes the 1985 smash hit “Conga.” Click here for more details.
 
                      
 
Trayvon Martin Foundation’s 11th Year Memorial Remembrance Weekend
 
To commemorate what would have been Trayvon’s 28th birthday, the Trayvon Martin Foundation (TMF) has planned a weekend of events in his honor.  On February 4, the Annual Peace Walk and Peace Talk will include motivational speakers, local bands, and fun for the entire family.  The Annual Remembrance Dinner and Champion for Justice Awards will be held on February 5.  Connie Kinnard, Senior Vice President of Multicultural Tourism & Development will be honored as the “2023 Champion for Justice and Peace of the Year” for her dedication and commitment to the TMF.  Proceeds raised support various community programs.  Click here to learn more.
 
 
 
Haitian Folkloric Dance Class Hosts Johnnoiry Saint Philippe

Cécile McLorin Salvant: Ghost Song
 
Come to the Knight Concert Hall, on February 3, to be delighted by Cécile McLorin Salvant.  This 2020 MacArthur Fellow and three-time Grammy Award winner, singer and composer brings historical perspective, a renewed sense of drama and an enlightened musical understanding to jazz standards and her own compositions. The Miami native’s newest album, Ghost Song, features a diverse mix of seven originals and five interpretations on the themes of ghosts, nostalgia and yearning. Kurt Weill’s The Road of Promise
 
Join Orchestra Miami for a rare opportunity to hear a lost musical masterpiece!  You can “discover Miami through music” as Orchestra Miami present’s Kurt Weill’s rarely-heard oratorio The Road of Promise at Temple Emanu-El on Miami Beach on February 4 and 5.  Adapted from Weill’s mammoth opera, The Eternal Road, by Ed Harsh, The Road of Promise is a piece of living history.  Click here for details and to purchase tickets.

The History of Black Business in Miami
 
In celebration of Black History Month, a collaboration with Miami-Dade County Commissioner Marleine Bastien with Small Business Development Division, join us on February 8 at the Father Gerard Jean-Juste Community Center.  Meet with owners of historical black businesses located in Miami who have been in business for more than fifteen years that are still thriving. Alexander C. Lightborune Street Naming Ceremony
 
On February 10, the City of Miami will honor a Black Miami Pioneer Incorporator, Alexander C. Lightborune, with a street designation.  The designation will encompass the area of Northwest 1st Court and 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Street. The ceremony will take place at the Greater Bethel AME church, the church that Lightbourne founded in 1896.  More details here.
 
                      
 
A Great Day at Oak Grove Park
 
Miami Light Project and Community Arts and Culture have partnered with the Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department to create and present this inaugural music festival on Saturday, February 18.  Come enjoy a day-long celebration of art, culture and community in Miami-Dade County‘s beautiful Oak Grove Park.  The free, all-ages show will feature international, regional, and local talent from Haiti, Cuba, and Miami.  Click here for more information on this event. 
 
                      
 
Shenandoah Bike Tour
 
The Miami Shenandoah Neighborhood Association (MSNA) invites you to a family-friendly bike tour of their colorful neighborhood. They will make some fun stops along the way. The ride starts at Shenandoah Park at 10am. Come take a ride!  This event, on February 18, is free to the public, but registration is required. 
 
                      
 
38th Annual South Miami Rotary Art Festival
 
Come on out to downtown South Miami for the The South Miami Rotary Art Festival taking place February 25-26.  The festival features 129 outstanding artists, a fine expanded food court and beer garden, and live jazz onstage.  Come and support the arts!  All profits used by the Rotary Club to fund scholarships and local community projects.   Click here for festival information.
 
                      
 
Miami Dade College Receives $500,000 Grant
 
Miami Dade College has been awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant in the amount of $500,000 to help renovate its National Historic Landmark Freedom Tower, coined the Ellis Island of the South, located in the heart of Downtown Miami.  The grant is part of NEH’s $28.1 million effort to support innovative projects that use digital tools and technology to further humanities research and increase the accessibility of public programs, cultural and archival materials, and educational resources for large audiences.
 
                      
 
Call to Artist -  NoMi MURALscape Project
 
The North Miami Community Redevelopment Agency (NMCRA), through its Arts in Public Places program, seeks to commission the design of original works of art for its city wide mural public arts initiative. Qualified artists will create a mosaic of murals throughout the NMCRA that infuses culture and tapestry creating a narrative that can invoke thoughts and transformation. Each mural will reflect the city's theme of “Resilience and Sustainability”.  Artists are invited to submit a short bio and samples of their existing work to be considered, by February 28.  Click here for details.

La Alegria de Vivir: A Moment in Venezuelan Jewish Life 
 
La Alegria de Vivir: A Moment in Venezuelan Jewish Life is a series of colorful paintings by Silvia Cohen inspired by life in Venezuela in the 50’s and 60’s. Cohen chose unique moments from her own story and those of family and friends to illustrate Venezuela’s vibrant Jewish community. The exhibition will be on view at the Jewish Museum of Florida - FIU through February 2023. Click here for more.
 
 
 
Remaking Miami: Josefina Tarafa's Photographs of the 1970s
 
During the 1970s, the photographer, editor, and philanthropist, Josefina Tarafa created an exceptional body of images that capture Miami transformed by the arrival of her fellow Cuban immigrants.  On view through March 17, 2023 at Miami Dade College's North Campus, Remaking Miami is the first exhibition dedicated to Tarafa's photography.
 
 
 
HistoryMiami Museum's New Artist-in-Residence
 
HistoryMiami Museum is proud to announce their new artist-in-residence, the Henry Linárez Ensemble! Henry is a cuatro musician, born in Barquisimeto, Venezuela.  He directs the Henry Linárez Ensemble, a cohort of professional South Florida musicians who perform Venezuelan music fused with Latin rhythms. As Black History is American History, it is vital to tell the critical stories of struggle and triumph in South Florida. Virginia Key Beach Park Trust (VKBPT) is so proud to announce that our 75th Anniversary Documentary on an “Emerging Black Miami” is nominated for an Emmy Award.  Huge Kudos to the small but mighty VKBPT team who worked diligently on this project to share this inspiring and important Miami multi-cultural history every day and to our donors who funded this project. Vizcaya Museum and Gardens Features Podcast Honoring Black Coconut Grove
 
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens has partnered with local matriarchs to produce a podcast highlighting the history and accomplishments of Coconut Grove’s Black community. Titled “The Rich and Forgotten History of Black Coconut Grove,” this three-episode series features stories from legacy residents of the neighborhood’s establishment and through their life experiences from the 1930s to the modern day. Theater with Deep Roots in Black Community Will Get its Voice Again
 
In case you haven't heard, Coconut Grove's Ace Theater, which was built in the 1930s and was the heart of the Grove’s Black community during the Jim Crow era, will be restored and reopened thanks to a National Park Service grant.  The Nationoal Park Service, in a new program aimed at preserving sites related to the country’s equal-rights battles, awarded $398K to the Ace Theater.
