Nu Deco Ensemble Featuring Wyclef Jean

Miami's Own Jonathan Escoffery
 
For eight days last month, the Miami Book Fair presented a literary wonderland in person downtown as well as online, hosting hundreds of diverse, critically acclaimed authors. One of those authors was Miami’s own Jonathan Escoffery.  The Jamaican-American novelist used Miami as his muse for his debut story collection, “If I Survive You.” Award-winning Escoffery knows of what he writes: A product of G. Holmes Braddock High and Florida International University, he was reared in the 305 by Jamaican parents.  Click here to learn more about the author.

Get to know The Miami Circle Walking Tour
 
Join Dade Heritage Trust, on December 10, on a waterfront walking tour to get to know the Miami Circle!  The Miami Circle on the south bank of the Miami River was a Tequesta Indian ceremonial space, saved from development in the 1990’s. It’s a great story, an amazing venue - yet few know the facts behind the history, archaeology and advocacy efforts that protected this valuable piece of property fronting the mouth of the Miami River.  More details here.

Celebrate International Human Rights weekend at a free expo that brings together all of the City of Miami Beach's human rights related committees. The Miami Gardens Street Fair & Marketplace
 
This street fair and marketplace features local makers selling everything from jewelry to colorful tropical clothing, interspersed with fresh produce vendors and food trucks from local chefs. Event takes place the third Saturday of every month from 3 to 8 p.m. through December 17.  Look for unique gifts, food and beauty products. Immerse yourself in Native American culture with a three-day gathering in the heart of the Florida Everglades December 29-31.  The Miccosukee Indian Arts and Crafts Festival will feature indigenous music and dance performances, an artisan market featuring crafts and authentic cuisine, and alligator handling demonstrations.
 
 
 
Where We Stand
 
Miami-Dade Public Housing and Community Development (PHCD)  introduced our first in the nation Artist-in-Residence Program in Miami’s Liberty City.  To commemorate the new program, local artist Addonis Parker opened his latest and final exhibit titled “Where We Stand”.  The exhibit, running through January 6, encompasses a positive but spiritual view of the Black community’s silent protest. MOAD at Miami Book Fair
 
Join MOAD at the Miami Book Fair Street Fair and be one of the first to experience Estuary [Pavilion for MOAD], a work by Rafael Domenech. The Pavilion functions on multiple levels — as a public sculpture, a reflection on the written word, a platform for live performances and public gatherings, and a meditative environment. La Alegria de Vivir: A Moment in Venezuelan Jewish Life 
 
La Alegria de Vivir: A Moment in Venezuelan Jewish Life is a series of colorful paintings by Silvia Cohen inspired by life in Venezuela in the 50’s and 60’s. Cohen chose unique moments from her own story and those of family and friends to illustrate Venezuela’s vibrant Jewish community. The exhibition will be on view at the Jewish Museum of Florida - FIU through February 2023. Click here for more.
 
 
 
Remaking Miami: Josefina Tarafa's Photographs of the 1970s
 
During the 1970s, the photographer, editor, and philanthropist, Josefina Tarafa created an exceptional body of images that capture Miami transformed by the arrival of her fellow Cuban immigrants.  On view through March 17, 2023 at Miami Dade College's North Campus, Remaking Miami is the first exhibition dedicated to Tarafa's photography.

Virginia Key Beach Park Trust (VKBPT) is so proud to announce that our 75th Anniversary Documentary on an “Emerging Black Miami” is nominated for an Emmy Award.  Huge Kudos to the small but mighty VKBPT team who worked diligently on this project to share this inspiring and important Miami multi-cultural history every day and to our donors who funded this project. HistoryMiami Museum New Artist-in-Residence
 
HistoryMiami Museum is proud to announce our new Artist-in-Residence who will serve through December 2022! Since 1949, the Ukrainian Dancers of Miami have preserved and promoted Ukraine’s culture through traditional music and dance performances. Composed of about 40 Ukrainians and Ukrainian-Americans, the ensemble showcases traditional Avramenko dances as well as original pieces. The dance troupe performs year-round in South Florida at festivals, cultural programs, and schools, and has performed across the state at venues such as EPCOT’s World Showcase in Walt Disney World and Orlando ArtsFest. The Ukrainian Dancers of Miami are committed to educating others in the traditions of their ethnic heritage and keeping alive the legacy of Ukrainian dance.  Learn more here.
 
 
 
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens Features Podcast Honoring Black Coconut Grove
 
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens has partnered with local matriarchs to produce a podcast highlighting the history and accomplishments of Coconut Grove’s Black community. Titled “The Rich and Forgotten History of Black Coconut Grove,” this three-episode series features stories from legacy residents of the neighborhood’s establishment and through their life experiences from the 1930s to the modern day. Theater with Deep Roots in Black Community Will Get its Voice Again
 
In case you haven't heard, Coconut Grove's Ace Theater, which was built in the 1930s and was the heart of the Grove’s Black community during the Jim Crow era, will be restored and reopened thanks to a National Park Service grant.  The Nationoal Park Service, in a new program aimed at preserving sites related to the country’s equal-rights battles, awarded $398K to the Ace Theater.
