CultureFest 305: Celebrating What Makes Miami, Miami

Museum of Contemporary Art of the Americas
 
The Kendall Art Cultural Center announces its transition to and opening as the new Museum of Contemporary Art of The Americas (MoCA-Americas). The new MoCA-Americas emerges as a space to bring contemporary art to life as a cultural bridge amongst the diverse art expressions of the Americas. MoCA-Americas fosters transparency, understanding, and trust amongst local and global communities.  The inauguration will be on November 11. 
 
 
 
The Green Bird
 
The Green Bird by Hillary DePiano and directed by Melvin Huffnagle is presented by FIU Theatre. The king is lost, the queen is buried alive, the kingdom is in peril. Can twins Renzo and Barbarina unravel the mystery of the Green Bird in time to save everyone?  A wildly hilarious adaptation of Gozzi’s commedia dell’arte classic.  Runs November 11-20 at The Wertheim Mainstage Theatre.
 
 
 
North Miami BrewFest
 
On November 12, enjoy some of the best craft breweries in Florida and their one-of-a-kind beers paired with delicious gourmet bites. The Miami Short Film Festival

El Matrimonio Secreto
 
You couldn’t ask for an opera made more for Miami than El Matrimonio Secreto (The Secret Marriage) by Domenico Cimarosa.  Set among the world of the hard-working Cuban diaspora in the Miami Beach of the 1980s, this delicious comedy will delight your ear and tickle your funny bone.  Playing November 12 -15 at the Adrienne Arsht Center.
 
 
 
Dimensions Dance Theatre of Miami: Latin Voices
 
Dimensions Dance Theatre of Miami brings the heat of Cuban nostalgia back to the Miami stage on November 12.  Its program includes “Juanita y Alicia,” a crowd-pleasing, toe-tapping favorite with a full Latin band; a new ballet from Dimensions’ choreographer in residence, Yanis Pikeris; and the South Florida premiere of “Balance,” a contemporary ballet from Jimmy Orrante.  More details here.
 
 
 
New Times Tacolandia
 
Considered one the region’s most anticipated events for foodies.  This outdoor taco-sampling festival will feature some of South Florida’s best taquerias, from urban contemporary to authentic street-style. Jazz in the Park Concert
 
On Saturday, November 12, the Town of Miami Lakes is hosting a free Jazz in the Park Concert. Join us at Veterans Park as renowned singer Nicole Henry lights up the stage with her passionate, soulful voice and heartfelt charisma. Original Roots: The Sound & Story of Jamaican Tradition
 
This is a special pre-Miami Book Fair event celebrating Jamaican Independence.  Join Olive Senior, Jamaica’s poet laureate, the Tallawah Mento Band, and The Jamaican Folk Revue for storytelling and music on November 12.  Followed by a panel including R. El Maíz de mi Gente
 
Explore the evolution of Mexican music and visual art with New World Symphony Fellows on November 12 at El Maíz de mi Gente (The Corn of my People), a special  NWS Blue presentation celebrating the diversity of Mexican culture. The performance features a multi-genre program that includes the music of Carlos Chavez, Federico Ibarra, Arturo Marquez, Blas Galindo and more as well as visuals of ancient Mayan art and contemporary Mexican cinema.
 
 
 
Meet Miami MoCAAD at the Wall
 
Experience a Miami State of Mind with the Miami Museum of Contemporary art of the African Diaspora and experience the Veo Veo, I See I See, Mwen Wè Mwen Wè Interactive Oral History QR codes. Join Dade Heritage Trust on November 13 for the Coral Rocks! Bike Tour of homes built of oolitic limestone in urban Miami neighborhoods!  Coral Rocks! – Dade Heritage Trust is leading an initiative to protect, preserve and designate Miami’s coral rock (aka oolitic limestone homes) and this tour will introduce riders to the vast number of these structures that exist throughout urban Miami.  Click here more information.
 
 
 
Black Restaurant Week
 
Black Restaurant Week is dedicated to celebrating the flavors of African-American, African, and Caribbean cuisine nationwide. Through a series of events and promotional campaigns, Black Restaurant Week’s culinary initiatives help introduce culinary businesses and culinary professionals to the community. Their innovative approach to a restaurant week includes highlighting other aspects of culinary businesses including catering services, food trucks, and culinary products. This helps stimulates the local economy and presents full access to the Black culinary industry which is a key ingredient to the American culture. For ten days from November 11-20, foodies will be able to eat their hearts out at local participating restaurants, bakeries and food trucks; offering weekly specials for breakfast, lunch, dinner, brunch, or happy hour. For eight days in November, Miami Book Fair transforms downtown into a literary wonderland, hosting hundreds of critically acclaimed authors in three languages; talking politics, pop culture, and all manner of impactful prose. Miamibloco Mondays Community Workshop & Bateria Rehearsal
 
On Monday November 14 and November 28, Miamibloco opens its doors to share an experiential taste of Afrobrazilian percussion with our community. We’ll teach you the rhythms, the hand signals, the steps, and to share our love for Brazilian percussion and culture, regardless of your musical experience.  Every community workshop is followed by a Miamibloco Bateria rehearsal that is open to the public from 7-9pm for you to grab a drink and dance to live Samba. Conversations with Miami's Cultural Pioneers: Marshall Davis
 
Join the Miami Emerging Arts Leaders for a virtual interview with Marshall Davis, Managing Director of the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center, with opening remarks by Michael Spring, Director of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs. For 38 years,  Mr. Davis has helped shape Miami’s cultural landscape through his work at the Center, promoting Black arts excellence and providing exceptional arts education. Mr. Davis designed revolutionary, multidisciplinary arts training programs to engage students with their cultural heritage while training in theater, dance, music and the visual arts. North Beach Social: Munir Hossn
 
Brazilian composer and multi-instrumentalist Munir Hossn brings his unique multicultural grooves to the Bandshell for the November installment of North Beach Social, the Rhythm Foundation's free monthly concert series showcasing South Florida artists. For his Thursday, November 17 performance, Hossn will start with a set of unreleased songs played solo, leading into some AfroBrazilian Jazz by his trio, and closing with his ’supergroup’ Elas.  Click here for more.
 
 
 
No Vacancy
 
The City of Miami Beach, in collaboration with the Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority, is pleased to announce the third edition of No Vacancy. No Vacancy is a juried art competition that celebrates artists, provokes critical discourse, and invites the public to experience Miami Beach’s famed hotels as destination art spaces.  Art will be on display from November 17 through December 8 at twelve Miami Beach hotels. Rising Appalachia
 
 As world travelers for nearly two decades, Rising Appalachia have merged multiple global music influences with their own southern roots to create the inviting new folk album, Leylines. La Alegria de Vivir: A Moment in Venezuelan Jewish Life 
 
La Alegria de Vivir: A Moment in Venezuelan Jewish Life is a series of colorful paintings by Silvia Cohen inspired by life in Venezuela in the 50’s and 60’s. Cohen chose unique moments from her own story and those of family and friends to illustrate Venezuela’s vibrant Jewish community.
