Caribbean-American Heritage Month

The month of June is when the commemoration of Caribbean-American Heritage Month was adopted by the U.S. House of Representatives in 2005 to recognize the significance of Caribbean people and their descendants in the history and culture of the United States. Through the commemoration of this month, the hope is to ensure that America is reminded that its greatness lies in its diversity, with Caribbean immigrants from founding father Alexander Hamilton, to journalist Malcolm Gladwell, who have shaped the American dream.

African-American Music Appreciation Month

Since 1979, the United States has set aside the month of June to appreciate the musical contributions of its African-American musicians, composers, singers and songwriters.  The lyrics and melodies of African-American music have played a powerful role in defining America’s unique soundscape.  From the soulful streets of the Big Easy to the recording studios of Los Angeles, African-American music has shaped our American culture.  During this month (formerly known as Black Music Month), we pay tribute to the monumental achievements of African‑American artists who pioneered and evolved the blues, jazz, gospel, rock and roll, rap, hip-hop, and other iconic genres.
