Overtown Office of Miami's First Black Judge Declared a Historic Site

Earlier this month, the City of Miami's Historic and Environmental Preservation Board voted unanimously to designate the building that was once the law office of Lawson E. Thomas as a historic site, ensuring the preservation of his legacy in the face of gentrification and developer-backed interests in the area. Thomas was Miami-Dade County's first Black judge and the first Black attorney in Miami to stand before a white judge. In his day, hewas a civil-rights activist and a pillar of the community in Overtown, one of Miami's historically Black neighborhoods. Now that his onetime office has been recognized as a historic site, Dr. Enid Pinkney hopes the city will revitalize the building and continue to tell Lawson E. Thomas' story so future generations might appreciate his considerable contribution to South Florida's civil-rights movement. Read full story here.

Botero at Full Volume

An exhibition on the graphics of the famous Colombian artist on display now through June 30 at DORCAM in City Place Doral. When we talk about Fernando Botero, we immediately think of those paintings and sculptures that, with their gargantuan dimensions, seem to want to overflow galleries and cities around the world. However, the thick figuration of the Colombian has also flooded a field of plastic for a long time that is sometimes considered, unfairly, a minor art. For this reason, to demonstrate that the weight of Fernando Botero is not lightened beyond the borders of the gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Doral (DORCAM), in coordination with Adriana Meneses Art and David Restrepo Art, is now opening an exhibition which brings precisely 45 posters of this artist obsessed with volume to the gallery. Botero at Full Volume.
