Haitian Heritage Cultural Month: Passport to Discover the Beauty of Haiti

Orquesta AKOKAN

On May 5, the Arsht Center presents Orquesta Akokán , a blazing ensemble creating deeply soulful mambo reminiscent of Benny Moré, Pérez Prado, and Banda Gigante in the 1940s and ’50s. They polish Cuban mambo’s golden sound to a luminous, contemporary sheen and imbue legendary Cuban grooves with a renewed vitality and a powerful sense of “akokán”.

Tee Up for the H.O.T. Challenge Golf Tournament

The GMCVB hosts their 29th Annual H.O.T. Challenge Golf Tournament, benefiting the Black Hospitality Initiative (BHI), Friday May 6 at the Miami Beach Golf Club. Focused on advancing economic participation for Black Americans in Greater Miami & Miami Beach’s hospitality industry, the BHI has awarded more than 450 scholarships & raised over $3.5 million in scholarship funds since its launch in 1991.

Family Fest: Afrique en Cirque

Afrique en Cirque is a highly colorful creation featuring a handful of incredible acrobats and musicians from Cirque Kalabanté performing their authentic choreography to the frantic rhythms of djembes and other native instruments of Guinea. The musical sound of the kora and the performers take us to a place that radiates the diversity of traditional African arts. Held on May 7 as part of the Arsht Center Series Family Fest.

Taste of Haiti

Taste of Haiti brings to the community of South Florida a discovery of Haiti’s Culture and flavors primarily though its food and all its cultural components. The festival offers a blend of the best of Haiti’s cuisine, music and art. On May 7, from 2-10pm, visitors have the opportunity to go around the chosen venue sampling food from various local restaurants, catering companies, bakeries, and chefs, and can enjoy the flavors of Haitian rum, beer, soda and juices at the VIP tent . Taste of Haiti offers a range of activities throughout the day such as cooking demos, a chefs cooking competition, live music, display of Haitian art for purchase. Learn more here.

Leyla McCalla - Breaking the Thermometer to Hide the Fever

"Breaking the Thermometer to Hide the Fever" is a multidisciplinary performance set to new music by Haitian-American singer-songwriter Leyla McCalla. The project explores the legacy of Radio Haiti-Inter, Haiti’s first privately owned Creole-speaking radio station, and the assassination of its owner, Jean Dominique, in 2000. The title is derived from a proverb used by Dominique to describe the spirit of Haiti’s marginalized poor in the face of violence and political oppression. The 5th Annual GroundUP Music Festival takes place May 6-8 at the North Beach Bandshell on Miami Beach. The festival features dozens of performers celebrating music with intimate masterclasses and expert workshops. The Miami Book Fair presents online programming as part of the Little Haiti Book Festival. On May 8, there will be a celebration of the 100th birthday of two Haitian literary masters: Jacques Stephen Alexis and Émile Célestin Mégie with Arnold Antonin, Marc Exavier, Angelucci Manigat, and Lyonel Trouillot. American Black Film Festival Returns to Miami

Botero at Full Volume

An exhibition on the graphics of the famous Colombian artist on display now through June 30 at DORCAM in City Place Doral. When we talk about Fernando Botero, we immediately think of those paintings and sculptures that, with their gargantuan dimensions, seem to want to overflow galleries and cities around the world. However, the thick figuration of the Colombian has also flooded a field of plastic for a long time that is sometimes considered, unfairly, a minor art. For this reason, to demonstrate that the weight of Fernando Botero is not lightened beyond the borders of the gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Doral (DORCAM), in coordination with Adriana Meneses Art and David Restrepo Art, is now opening an exhibition which brings precisely 45 posters of this artist obsessed with volume to the gallery. HistoryMiami Museum Extends "It’s a Miami Thing: Highlights from Our Collection"

In celebration of the City of Miami’s 125th birthday, you can explore highlights from the museum’s vast collection of artifacts and archival materials. Over the decades, the museum has collaborated with the community to collect, preserve, and share local history, in particular objects that document the uniqueness of our city. It's a Miami Thing will display hundreds of items including unearthed Tequesta artifacts from 800 A.D., Seminole patchwork clothing, prints from naturalist John James Audubon’s Birds of America, treasure salvaged from the 1622 Nuestra Señora de Atocha shipwreck, discovered 35 years ago off the coast of the Florida Keys, and a cape from famed astrologer Walter Mercado. Negra by Randolph Ward

The complexities of femininity, gender identity, and colorism come to the screen in a theatrical adaptation of Me Gritaron Negra by the Peruvian Mother of Dance Theater Victoria Santa Cruz. Negra, is a short dance film presented by international choreographer Randolph Ward in Partnership with Unity Coalition for the 2020 Celebrate Orgullo’s Virtual Festival and stars gender fluid Brazilian born artist Natanael Leal.
