Matters of the Inner City, A Solo Exhibition by Chalres Humes, Jr. - Conversation and Celebration |
|
The African Heritage Cultural Art Center’s Amadlozi Gallery is presenting “Matters of the Inner City,” the first solo exhibition in decades by Miami-based artist Charles Humes Jr. The exhibition features a series of mixed-media works exploring the history, culture, and issues of Black diasporic communities in South Florida. The exhibition will be available to view through February 19. Join us on January 22, from 3-6pm for a lively celebration, conversation, and tour of Matters of the Inner City with the artist Charles Humes Jr. Enjoy music, light food and drinks. The exhibition highlights large-scale paintings and exemplifies the artists’ range and talent as a contemporary American painter, printmaker, and portraitist. Humes’ work connects viewers with issues plaguing inner-city communities and conveys the narratives, experiences, and perspectives of everyday African Americans and people of color. His most recent works demonstrate his use of juxtaposition, collage, and environments. Humes champions the plight of decaying communities and challenges stereotypes predicated on social and economic prejudices. His work tackles the issues of mental health, homelessness, violence, inadequate health care and educational opportunities, dilapidated housing, and extreme poverty. Learn more here. |
