Dr. Martin Luther King's Impact on Miami |
Miami has a special claim to Dr. King. He visited the city regularly and would stay at the Historic Hampton House when he visited. The hotel was the place to be for the black community in Miami, and other notables who stayed there include Muhammad Ali, Sammy Davis, Jr., Jackie Robinson and many others. In fact, Dr. King delivered an early version of his “I Have A Dream” speech at the Hampton House in 1960. |

45th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade & Festivities |
On Monday, January 17, Miami celebrates this federal holiday with the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade & Festivities in Liberty City. In 1977, Miami was the first city in the country to organize a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade with the leadership of Preston Marshall. The parade features floats, marching bands, Carnaval dancers, student athletes and community leaders along Liberty City’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. It culminates in a festival at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park where a statue of the reverend has been erected. The festivities promote collaboration to produce an intergenerational celebration that cultivates racial pride and nurture community building. The GMCVB is a sponsor of the MLK Jr. Day Parade & Festivities. |

MLK Day of Service |
Undeniably the most visible figure in the Civil Rights movement, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is honored across the country annually on the third Monday in January with Martin Luther King Jr. Day. It's the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. Throughout the long weekend, this day is celebrated with various events and service projects held across Greater Miami and Miami Beach. |
