Miami MoCAAD Hosts Afro-Latinx Conversations.
 
MiamiMoCAAD and Orlando Addison, founder of the Ernesto Gamboa project, will collaborate to host a series of virtual conversations aimed at community dialogue revealing hidden histories, contributions, and art of the Afro-Latinx community.  These spirited conversations will share information excluded from history books regarding the Afro-Latinx community, explain historical barriers that have kept the Afro-Latinx community invisible, and share contributions of Afro-Latinx artists.  Oct 7 from 6:00 to 7:30 pm: Definition of terms and presence of Africans in the new world; Oct 21 from 6:00 to 7:30 pm:  Traffic and commercialization of Africans in the New World; the King and Queen of Spain’s edict granting authorizing traffickers to enslave Africans and transport them to the New World; Afro-Latinx in political emancipation; Nov 4 from 6:00 to 7:30pm: Barriers keeping history and contributions of  Latinx Afro-descendants hidden. Nov 28 from 4:00 to 6:30pm: Erica Moiah James, Caribbean art historian and curator, will moderate a conversation with Kandy Lopez, artist, Orlando Addison. Learn more about MoCAAD.
 
 
 
MOCA North Miami to Present 1st Retrospective of Late Afro-Caribbean Artist Michael Richards
 
The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) is proud to host the exhibition "Michael Richards: Are You Down?" ― the first museum retrospective of the work of Michael Richards. The Afro-Caribbean artist’s sculptural and drawing practice reflects on issues of racial inequity, anti-blackness, and diasporic identity.Co-curated by Alex Fialho and Melissa Levin, “Michael Richards: Are You Down?” marks the largest exhibition of Richards’ work to date. Richards passed away in the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks while working in his Lower Manhattan Cultural Council World Views studio, located on the 92nd floor of World Trade Center Tower One. The exhibition will be on view through Oct. 10, commemorating the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

Call to artists for the Artist-in-Residence Program 
 
A call to artists is currently available for the Deering Estate Artist-in-Residence (AIR) Program for Visual, Literary, Performing, and Cross-disciplinary Artists. Artists are invited to apply before the October 17, 2021, 11:59 pm EST. The application is for Studio Residencies and Non-Studio Project Residencies at the Deering Estate that begin as early as December 1, 2021. Soul Basel 2021 Open Call to Artist - Deadline October 20
 
Seeking artist submissions for participation in the Soul Basel Open-Air Art Village presented by the Black Archives History & Research Foundation of South Florida, Inc., in partnership with the Southeast Overtown Park West Community Redevelopment Agency.The call is open to all artists. The selection process will be made by the Black Archives’ curatorial team. There is no fee for application, and all selected artists will be provided with a 10x10 tent to display & sell their works. The Soul Basel Open-Air Art Village will run December 2 - 5, 2021 from 10 am to Midnight.  Applicants should submit their name, contact information, link to digital portfolio and/or hi-res images of your work to kpritchett@bahlt.org with the subject header: "SOUL BASEL 2021 SUBMISSION". The application deadline is Wednesday, October 20 at 5pm. Selected artists will be notified during the week of October 25.

Art on the Plaza is back with the latest installment from artist Najja Moon!
Her installation will focus on themes of reflection and self-empowerment through a dynamic sculptural intervention resembling a large-scale mirror on MOCA Plaza. Through November 14, you can catch the installation at the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA)!
 
 
 
2021-2022 South Florida Cultural Consortium (SFCC) Grant Deadline: Monday, October 25, 2021
 
The South Florida Cultural Consortium Grant Program offers the largest regional, government-sponsored artists’ grants in the United States, awarding $15,000 and $7,500 grants to resident visual and media artists from the counties of Broward, Martin, Miami-Dade, Monroe, and Palm Beach. Since it was established in 1988, the Consortium has awarded over to $4 million in grants to over 300 artists. In addition to receiving the grant, the artists take part in an exhibition hosted and organized by a visual arts institution in one of the five counties.  See application details and guidelines.

Doral Announces Call to Artists for the Acquisition of Works of Art
 
The City of Doral has launched a Call to Artists requesting proposals from artists for the acquisition of works of art to be installed within the City of Doral. Proposals must be submitted prior to the deadline on December 8, 2021, at 5:00 p.m. to Elizabeth.Alvarez@cityofdoral.com. Call to Artist: Le Art Noir, Diversity in Color
 
This art exhibition represents “Art of Times” by focusing on relevant topics and showcasing artists that capture the heartbeat of our society. Taking place during Art Basel Miami Beach, this exhibition will highlight artists that capture emotional and important matters through their lens and inspire change.   The exhibition will be held Dec 2 - 5, 2021 at The African Heritage Cultural Arts Center. Miami MoCAAD Presents 2021 Bienal  de São Paulo, Brazil
 
The Miami Museum of Contemporary Art of the African Diaspora presents the Bienal de São Paulo, the largest exhibition in the southern hemisphere, running through December 5, 2021. Featuring 91 artists from around the world, this year will include Cuban artist Belkis Ayón who is well known for her depictions of the myths from Abakuá, a secret Afrocuban society. Ase: Afro Frequencies Opens at ARTECHOUSE
 
ARTECHOUSE opens its latest collaboration with Vince Fraser, a London-based Afro-surrealist visual artist and illustrator, on his first solo exhibition. Centered around themes of identity and power Aṣẹ: Afro Frequencies is an immersive, multi-sensory contemplation of the Black experience through a futuristic lens. Lin-Manuel Miranda's TeeRico Grants
 

TeeRico will be giving out monthly grants of $5,000 to small community-based organizations serving underrepresented kids and young adults through programming in the arts and other support services. The Pérez CreARTE Grant Program Will Invest Over $1.5 Million in Local Arts Organizations
 
The Jorge M. Pérez Family Foundation at The Miami Foundation aims to develop South Florida as a world-class urban center. A thriving, equitable arts community is essential to making Greater Miami a vibrant, connected and culturally engaging place to live. Arts and cultural industries have been particularly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, investments in arts organizations will be essential to their rebuilding and recovery. In 2021-2022, the Foundation’s CreARTE Program will invest over $1.5 million in Miami-Dade organizations, working to cultivate this ecosystem by expanding residents’ access to the arts and making our city a global hub for artistic excellence. The Pérez CreARTE Grant Program will open to applications in late April and will be awarding two-year grants to support arts access, arts education and artist fellowships and residencies in Miami. “Witness: Afro Perspectives from the Jorge M. Pérez Collection”
 
Zimbabwean-born Tandazani Dhlakama is assistant curator at Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) in Cape Town, South Africa. Open since 2017, it is the first major contemporary art museum in Africa.  Tandazani is also the curator for the exhibition, “Witness: Afro Perspectives from the Jorge M. Pérez Collection” and it will be on display through 2021 at El Espacio 23, 2270 NW 23rd St., Miami. HistoryMiami Museum’s New Artist-in-Residence
 
HistoryMiami Museum is proud to announce their newest artist-in-residence, Rose Max & Ramatis, a music duo specializing in the popular Brazilian music styles of samba, bossa nova, and chorinho. Both born in Rio de Janeiro, Rose Max and Ramatis Moraes moved to the U.S. in 1993 and now call Miami Beach home. Through performances and presentations, Rose Max & Ramatis share their passion for Brazilian culture and an appreciation for the mix of traditions that contribute to Brazil’s rich musical history.
