Message From Our President & CEO

Hello to all, and as always, thanks for your engagement and support of your GMCVB and our teams.

For obvious reasons, great interest continues on the road to full recovery – especially with some of the challenging news that many continue to grapple with.

A key barometer of course is hotel room demand (rooms consumed).  Our partnership with our hotels and the weekly STR reports generated (occupancy, average daily rate, revenue, demand) give one key variable of visitor volumes.  One report compiles a running total of the last four weeks (last 28 days).  It can be used to align with comparable periods as, for example, similar periods in 2019 and 2018.  With the recent Labor Day weekend and the popular build-up in the weeks prior as summer vacations drew to an end, there are some telling stats.

Using last weeks’ report we know the following:

Hotel Demand (Rooms Consumed) cumulative for the four week period ending September 4th was reported at 980,153 rooms sold.

During a similar time frame in 2019 and the four week period ending September 7th, hotel demand was reported at 1,041,593 rooms consumed.   Our most recent four-week period is pacing at 94% of the similar level in 2019.  2019 had the challenge of Hurricane Dorian, which tracked toward South Florida for many days, prior to devastating the Bahamas (making landfall on September 1st that year, Labor Day).  This uncertainty dampened overall room performance and in fact room demand was down 5.8% from the similar time frame in 2018.

Using 2018 numbers (hotel demand for four weeks), we saw 1,106,171 cumulative rooms consumed.  Our recent 2021 demand number is pacing at 88% of comparable levels for 2018.

The equally important story is average  daily rate.  ADR for our most recent four-week period was reported at $179.57 per night.  This compares quite favorably to the same periods in 2019 ($141.17) and 2018 ($149.50).  As a result, room revenues (and for the record, the corresponding hotel taxes generated from our industry) are pacing well ahead of where they were in both 2018 and 2019.  This is just another clear indicator of the important role our visitor, event, meetings and hospitality industry play in fueling the economic recovery for all of Miami Dade County – and why our collective work remains so important.  While 88 - 94% of previous hotel guest volumes are encouraging - we simply must redouble our efforts in the weeks and months ahead.

Today’s What’s Happening gives you a peek at some of our recent efforts.

David Whitaker
