South Miami Dade Cultural Arts Center Presents Indie Flicks: Stateless
 
As part of the South Miami Dade Cultural Arts Center (SMDCAC)’s 10th anniversary season, free screenings of Stateless will be available right from your home September 12-15. In Stateless, director Michele Stephenson explores the complex history and present-day politics of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Utilizing elements of magical realism and vivid cinematography, combined with gritty hidden camera footage and the legend of a young woman fleeing brutal violence, the film navigates through offices, living room meetings, and into street protests, revealing the depths and personal impact of institutionalized oppression. Conversations at MOCA: Present & Possible—Honoring Michael Richards 
 
2021 marks 20 years since Michael Richards’ tragic passing at the age of 38 in the attacks on September 11, 2001. To honor this anniversary, Richards’ cousin Dawn Dale and “Michael Richards: Are You Down?” co-curators Alex Fialho and Melissa Levin will be in dialogue with filmmaker, visual artist, and curator Tiona Nekkia McClodden to discuss the ongoing work of stewarding artists’ legacies. Dale has stored and cared for Richards’ artworks for two decades since Richards’ passing; Fialho and Levin have been engaged with curating Richards’ art since 2016; and McClodden has worked with the estates and archives of artists Brad Johnson, Essex Hemphill and Julius Eastman. Together, their conversation will consider the ongoing work of uplifting underknown Black artists, familial care for those who have passed, and amplifying Richards’ artistic practice in the wake of September 11.  Register here for this free Zoom event on September 14th from 7-8pm.

Miami Beach Pride believes in promoting community-engaged discussion to learn from various stakeholders and change-makers in the South Florida LGBTQ+ community. The five panels presented to the general public for free, will engage and serve a wide range of constituents of all ages and include Racial Inequality & Equity, Non-Binary & Gender Issues, Wellness & Mental Health, and more! PAMM Pride Night
 
Celebrate Miami Beach Pride at Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) with dinner, drag, and a movie on September 16th! Start your evening off with dinner and drag at Verde from 6:00 to 8:30pm (reservations required). Throughout the evening, take a guided Pride tour of the art inside the galleries or enjoy drinks on the terrace. As the sun sets, grab a seat on the waterfront terrace for a special showing of “The Birdcage” at 8:30pm. Drag performers will spice up the classic movie with live commentary and sass. Viernes Culturales / Cultural Fridays
 
This 20-year tradition to Little Havana, Viernes Culturales on Calle Ocho is held the third Friday of each month from avenues 12 to 17, from 4-10 p.m. Enjoy an evening of art, music and culture. Attendees can expect live music in most restaurants, including CubaOcho, Guantanamera, Old Havana, Sala’o, Café La Trova, Mofongo’s and Cubata Tapas y Vinos. Another attraction of Cultural Fridays is the free tour with Dr. Paul George, historian-in-residence at HistoryMiami Museum, starting at 7 p.m. in front of the Tower Theater. An Afternoon of Poetry with Caridad Moro-Gronlier

Spanish Film Club Festival
 
Miami Dade College, in collaboration with Pragda’s Spanish Film Club (SFC) program, is proud to present the Spanish Film Club Festival celebrating Ibero-American Cinema during this year’s Fall season. Hosted by Miami Film Festival and the Miami Dade College Campuses the program will be free to students and faculty, and intends to bring the very best in contemporary Latin American cinema and languages to the Miami Dade College community.  The program will present five films with different themes for each Campus, with either virtual and in-person screenings. Takht al-Nagham (Syrian Music Preservation Initiative)
 
As the performing arm of the Syrian Music Preservation Initiative, Takht al-Nagham Ensemble keeps alive the traditional music repertoire of Aleppo, long a center of traditional Arab music. “Back and Forth Allegories”  art exhibit by Cuban artist Tony Rodriguez, a sample of the progression of his work in the last decade, showcasing works that are already part of private collections. The exhibit will be on display at the Miami Hispanic Cultural Arts Center until September 27th.
 
 
 
Conversations at MOCA: Book Preview & Celebration for Michael Richards: Are You Down? 
 
MOCA will present “Conversations at MOCA: Book Preview & Celebration” – a preview and celebration of the forthcoming monograph Michael Richards: Are You Down?, scheduled for publication in Spring 2022. The monograph is co-published by MOCA North Miami and New York Consolidated (N-Y-C). The virtual preview brings together Edwidge Danticat, monograph contributor, acclaimed Miami-based author and MacArthur Fellow, with Camille Crain Drummond, editorial director at N-Y-C with particular interest in Michael Richards’ work as a descendant of a Tuskegee Airman. Danticat and Crain Drummond will discuss the wide-ranging themes in Richards’ dynamic artistic practice, including references to flight, the Tuskegee Airmen, Caribbean and African American histories, and more.  Register here for this free Zoom event on September 29th from 7-8pm.

Celebrate ORGULLO’s 2021 Festival explores the ART of ILUSIÓN – How the Art of Drag, Creativity, Talent and self-Expression influence our daily lives. The history of Drag is an evolution from a common theater practice to an award-winning form of entertainment that has gained legitimacy both on a national and international stage. Save the Date! The 37th Annual Miami Carnival Set to Restart on Columbus Day Weekend 
 
The Miami Broward One Carnival Host Committee (MBOCHC) and the South Florida Carnival Bandleaders Association have announced that they will host the 37th annual Miami Carnival cultural festival on Columbus Day weekend, October 10th. After working with county medical and park department officials in Miami-Dade and Broward County, the producers of the Miami Carnival have been given the green light to advance planning for the 2021 Miami Carnival celebrations. With guest safety as the highest priority, the Miami Broward Carnival One Host Committee (MBOCHC) will promote and implement an event plan of reduced capacity in adherence with recommended CDC COVID guidelines. HistoryMiami Museum Presents - It’s a Miami Thing: Highlights from Our Collection
 
In celebration of the City of Miami’s 125th birthday, you can explore highlights from the museum’s vast collection of artifacts and archival materials. Over the decades, the museum has collaborated with the community to collect, preserve, and share local history, in particular objects that document the uniqueness of our city. It's a Miami Thing will display hundreds of items including unearthed Tequesta artifacts from 800 A.D., Seminole patchwork clothing, prints from naturalist John James Audubon’s Birds of America, treasure salvaged from the 1622 Nuestra Señora de Atocha shipwreck, discovered 35 years ago off the coast of the Florida Keys, and a cape from famed astrologer Walter Mercado. HistoryMiami Museum’s New Artist-in-Residence
 
HistoryMiami Museum is proud to announce their newest artist-in-residence, Rose Max & Ramatis, a music duo specializing in the popular Brazilian music styles of samba, bossa nova, and chorinho. Both born in Rio de Janeiro, Rose Max and Ramatis Moraes moved to the U.S. in 1993 and now call Miami Beach home. Through performances and presentations, Rose Max & Ramatis share their passion for Brazilian culture and an appreciation for the mix of traditions that contribute to Brazil’s rich musical history. Negra by Randolph Ward
 
The complexities of femininity, gender identity, and colorism come to the screen in a theatrical adaptation of Me Gritaron Negra by the Peruvian Mother of Dance Theater Victoria Santa Cruz. Negra, is a short dance film presented by international choreographer Randolph Ward in Partnership with Unity Coalition for the 2020 Celebrate Orgullo’s Virtual Festival and stars gender fluid Brazilian born artist Natanael Leal. The film takes viewers on a journey of self love and the confrontation getting to that journey. Negra premiered as part of Celebrate Orgullo's BlackOut Performances. Click here to view Negra. 
 
 
 
The Bass Highlights Tour
 
Guided tours every Saturday from 2:00 to 3:00pm. Guests will explore various highlights of the collection, the museum’s architecture and current exhibitions both inside and outside of The Bass through an interactive guided tour. Trained educators will provide behind-the-scenes experience of The Bass Museum. This tour is included with cost of museum admission and maximum capacity applies on a first- come, first-served basis.
