Cuba Under the Stars - Musical and Dinner Show
 
A majestic outdoor musical theater show, presenting a beautiful love story through the Cuban culture and nostalgia. A grand orchestra, 25 Broadway dancers, renowned Cuban actors and Grammy award artists under the stars of Miami, while enjoying an exquisite top of the line gastronomy presentation. Cuba Under the Stars is running through the end of January at the Fair Expo.
 
 
 
Comics, Zines and Self-Publishing in the Digital Age
 
In celebration of our new exhibition, Will Eisner: Comic Illustrator and Innovator, JMOF-FIU presents a panel discussion featuring Bibi Andrade, Philip Lique, Jamila Rowser, and Zoe Welch in conversation about comics and independent publishing in Miami, zines as a tool for education, and the return to these tangible formats in the current moment.  This program is presented in partnership with EXILE Books, JMOF-FIU and Wolfsonian-FIU. On January 14th from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., join Gabriel Urrutia, author and mixologist, in conversation with Angel Gomez, founder and owner of Tremendo Garnish, as they bring you stories behind the origins and names of their favorite spirits. 44th Annual Art Deco Weekend
 
Presented bythe Miami Design Preservation League, this year's Art Deco Weekend, held from January 14-17 is the longest-running free community cultural Festival in Miami Beach will be held virtually. Art Deco Weekend was created nearly 43 years ago by the Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL) to showcase the beautiful Art Deco buildings of South Beach, saving it for future generations. MDPL’s early work was the catalyst that created the vibrant, world-class city we live in today. 
 
 
 
One Night In Miami Debuts Locally
 
The Hampton House, a historic Green Book hotel in Brownsville, along with Amazon Studios hosted a VIP private screening of the directorial debut of Regina King's film, One Night In Miami that depicts the magical night in Miami in 1964 that Muhammad Ali celebrated his heavyweight championship victory with his close friends Sam Cooke, Malcolm X and Jim Brown. The Hampton House will do future programming around the movie plus other activities throughout 2021.
 
 
 
Lessons of Service and Action: Fulfilling MLK's Legacy Today
 
Join The Idea Center @ Miami Dade College this Friday, January 15th for Lessons of Service and Action: Fulfilling MLK's Legacy Today, a special one-hour conversation with community leader Valencia Gunder (2019 Miami New Times Activist of the Year and director of The Smile Trust) and MDC student leaders. In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life and legacy, together they will inspire us with stories of servant leadership and activism, remind us why service is at the core of an empowered citizenry, and connect us to opportunities to continue learning and living Dr. King’s legacy in today’s times.

The Heritage Project: Black Greek Step & Marching Band Traditions 

On January 13th at 5:30 p.m. Black Greek Step & Marching Band Traditions will discuss the history of Black Greek organizations, the long-standing tradition of Black step shows and marching bands in historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and in Black American culture as a whole. 

Voices of Freedom: An Arsht Center Tribute to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 

Filmed at North Beach Bandshell, this live-streamed event will feature Miami-based performing artists reflecting on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s six principles of nonviolence. Voices of Freedom: An Arsht Center Tribute to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be presented in partnership with the City of Miami Beach. Voices of Freedom is a free and online event on January 16th at 7:00 p.m.

Live on the Plaza: Elastic Bond

On January 21st at 7:30 p.m., Miami favorite Elastic Bond creates an uplifting sound it describes as “psychedelic tropical soul.” Venezuelan producer-musician Andrés Ponce and Honduran singer-songwriter Sofy Encanto formed a five-piece band that blends funk, hip-hop, soul and Latin music performed in Spanish and English.

Jazz Roots on the Plaza: Lemon City Trio

Lemon City Trio was formed in Miami for the love of playing soul music and New Orleans funk. Guitarist Nick Tannura and drummer Aaron Glueckauf joined forces with organist and keyboard wizard Brian Robertson to create an outlet for their joined passion. Since then, the band has continued to push its envelope and blend influences to create a niche among organ trios. Join them on Friday, January 29 - 7:30 p.m.

 
 
 
Monday at the Museum: Fig Tree Discussion
 
In this next iteration of Black Lives in a Jewish Context, join Dr. Tudor Parfitt in conversation with Yonas Mulat for a post-film discussion around Fig Tree. 
Set during the Ethiopian civil war, Fig Tree tells the story of a Jewish teenager who hatches a scheme to keep her Christian boyfriend from being drafted, as she and her family prepare to flee the country and go to Israel.  The film will be available for independent viewing from January 18-25, 2021. On the Avenue: Holocaust and Genocide Awareness Week
 
FIU's three Washington Avenue-based SoBe arts outposts are gathering online for Holocaust and Genocide Awareness Week. In this edition of the informative series hosted by The Wolfsonian, Miami Beach Urban Studios, and Jewish Museum of Florida, we're focusing on exhibitions, collection items, and experiences that honor the resilience of the Jewish community and the memories of those lost during the Second World War. The program will include presentations on works such as wooden Polish synagogue models and the graphic designs of Austrian artist Julius Klinger, among others, and an intimate performance by violist Michael Klotz. This virtual event will be held on Tuesday, January 26th from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., register here.
 
 
 
Biscayne Boulevard - Virtual Tour with Dr. George
 

On January 29th from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., reflect upon the rise of Biscayne Boulevard on a virtual tour with Dr. Paul George. View some of the early buildings that made up Miami’s developing skyline, including the Miami News Tower and nearby hotels such as the Alcazar and Everglades Hotel. Explore the history of Bayfront Park, which by the 1930s was thought of as Miami’s “front porch,” and the floating aquarium that was once docked nearby. Learn more.

 
 
 
The UM Cuban Heritage Collection Presents: El Efecto Mariel - Before, During and After
 
Join us for this unique opportunity to hear a first-hand account from the Ambassador of the events leading up to the Mariel Boatlift - the massive exodus of over 125,000 Cuban migrants from the port of Mariel to the shores of South Florida.  As well as the details about his negotiations with Fidel Castro, the Carter administration, and the Peruvian government during the days and weeks that followed. The Doral Contemporary Art Museum (DORCAM) Presents: Manolo Valdés - The Legacy
 

The Doral Contemporary Art Museum (DORCAM) presents 'Manolo Valdés - The Legacy,' an outdoor exhibition of monumental sculptures by this world-renowned Contemporary Art Master. In partnership with the City of Doral, the monumental sculptures will be installed in the main public parks of the City of Doral as well as other selected locations. This showcase will be the largest exhibition of his epic sculptures to date and will be on view until June 2021. Click here for more information.

 
 
 
Baila Little Havana! Con Marisol Blanco
 
Dancer and Master Instructor Marisol Blanco offers a weekly Afro-Cuban dance class that spans the history, songs, steps, beats, passion, mysticism, and intensity of Cuban folklore and culture. The course includes traditional ballroom dances such as the danzón, mambo, cha cha chá, pilón, mozambique, son and the casino. Marisol will also teach dances of the Afro-Cuban heritage such as rumba (in its various expressions: yambú, guaguancó and columbia); and of various ethnicities and African traditions including Yoruba (from the Orichas), Aará (Fodunes), Bantú (Mpungos) and also Haitian (Loaces). Classes are every Monday from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.
 
 
 
Negra by Randoplh Ward
 
The complexities of femininity, gender identity, and colorism come to the screen in a theatrical adaptation of Me Gritaron Negra by the Peruvian Mother of Dance Theater Victoria Santa Cruz. Negra, is a short dance film presented by international choreographer Randolph Ward in Partnership with Unity Coalition for the 2020 Celebrate Orgullo’s Virtual Festival and stars gender fluid Brazilian born artist Natanael Leal. The film takes viewers on a journey of self love and the confrontation getting to that journey. Negra premiered as part of Celebrate Orgullo's BlackOut Performances.  Click here to view Negra.
 
 
 
Meet the Curator of Remaking Miami: Josefina Tarafa's Photographs of the 1970s
 
Scholar and guest curator José Antonio Navarrete speaks about the remarkable work of Josefina Tarafa, a prominent Cuban exile, photographer and philanthropist who captured Miami's profound transformation during the 1970s with exceptional documentary photographs.  "Josefina was ahead of her time," Navarrete says. "She was one of the first people to explore the relationship between immigration and culture." Watch the interview to learn more about Remaking Miami, the first exhibition ever dedicated to Josefina Tarafa's fascinating photography, opening November 5 at the Cuban Legacy Gallery.
