One Night In Miami Debuts Locally
 
The Hampton House, a historic Green Book hotel in Brownsville, along with Amazon Studios hosted a VIP private screening of the directorial debut of Regina King's film, One Night In Miami that depicts the magical night in Miami in 1964 that Muhammad Ali celebrated his heavyweight championship victory with his close friends Sam Cooke, Malcolm X and Jim Brown. Check out the official trailer here, or view the film on Amazon Prime or locally as Landmark Theatres.  The Hampton House will do future programming around the movie plus other activities throughout 2021. 
 
 
 
11th Anniversary Haiti Earthquake Vigil
 
The Little Haiti Cultural Center‘s continual mission is to foster positive experiences for the Haitian-American community, The City of Miami is pleased to commemorative the 11th anniversary of the Haiti earthquake virtually this year. We aim to provide the Haitian community with a memorable event and pay homage to those who passed away during the earthquake, as well as,  celebrate those who survived. The City of Miami’s, Little Haiti Cultural Complex (LHCC) invites you to participate by joining virtually on Tuesday, January 12th 2021 at 4:30pm on the Little Haiti Cultural Center Facebook and/Instagram page.  You may also join the Chokarella platform on Facebook, Instagram or Youtube.
 
 
 
The Heritage Project: Black Greek Step & Marching Band Traditions 
 

On January 13th at 5:30 p.m., this webinar will discuss the history of Black Greek organizations, the long-standing tradition of Black step shows and marching bands in historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and in Black American culture as a whole.  This online event is free, click here for more details.

 
 
 
Lessons of Service and Action: Fulfilling MLK's Legacy Today
 
Join The Idea Center @ Miami Dade College this Friday, January 15th for Lessons of Service and Action: Fulfilling MLK's Legacy Today, a special one-hour conversation with community leader Valencia Gunder (2019 Miami New Times Activist of the Year and director of The Smile Trust) and MDC student leaders. In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life and legacy, together they will inspire us with stories of servant leadership and activism, remind us why service is at the core of an empowered citizenry, and connect us to opportunities to continue learning and living Dr. King’s legacy in today’s times. 
 
 
 
MOCA Celebrates Haitian Independence Day 
 
In celebration of Haitian Independence Day, the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) hosted an intimate Haitian-American program of music and poetry on January 1st featuring Haitian-American multidisciplinary artist Inez Barlatier, musician and surrealist visual artist Jan Sebon, and author Fabienne Josaphat.  This virtual performance coincided with the museum’s current exhibition “Life & Spirituality in Haitian Art: Selection from the Betty and Isaac Rudman Trust Collection,” on view through March 14, 2021.

Overtown Children & Youth Coalition is hiring parent leaders immediately.  Must be a resident of Overtown and have experience as a parent, grandparent, foster parent, caregiver or guardian of children and youth ages 0-24.  Must be willing to advocate on behalf of Overtown children and have a flexible schedule.  Pays $15-$25 per hour for 1-0-25 hours per month. Voices of Freedom:  An Arsht Center Tribute to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 
 
Filmed at North Beach Bandshell, this live-streamed event will feature Miami-based performing artists reflecting on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s six principles of nonviolence. Voices of Freedom: An Arsht Center Tribute to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be presented in partnership with the City of Miami Beach on January 16th at 7:00 p.m.
 
 
 
Share Your Mariel Story
 
HistoryMiami Museum and the Cuban Heritage Collection at the University of Miami Libraries have partnered on a year-long program, El Efecto Mariel: Before, After, and During, comprising of webinars, live film streamings, informal talks, oral histories, and exhibitions.  You can share your personal memories, stories, and reflections related to Mariel. Stories will be collected virtually on a rolling basis and a series of prompts give you ideas from where you can begin your story. Submitted stories will become part of the permanent collections of the HistoryMiami Museum and Cuban Heritage Collection and featured on both online platforms. Learn more.
