Historic Hampton house Launches Live Music and Film Series
 
The Historic Hampton House in Liberty City has launched a music and film series, each celebrating African American tradition and delight. The upcoming show on December 11, Divas & Divo 1, will include South Florida’s with pop and jazz singers and musicians like Carole Ann Taylor, Aniye Strachan, Leesa Richards, Brenda Alford, Nikki Kidd, Nicole Yarling and Wendy Pedersen, together with vocalist LeNard Rutledge and saxophonist and singer Jesse Jones Jr.  For information on the Historic Hampton House, or the music and movie collection, visit HistoricHamptonHouse.org or the Miami Jazz and Film Society Facebook page.
 
 
 
Virtual Meet the Author featuring Richelle A. Lorde
 
On Thursday, December 10th at 7:00 p.m. join Black Archives' Kamila E. Pritchett in a virtual chat with pastor, business owner, former beauty queen, professor and now author, Richelle A. Lorde. Kamila and Richelle will talk about her interesting life journey and discuss her debut novel, 'A Matter of Choice', and why the book is so relatable.  A Matter of Choice' focuses on Alicia, who finds out who she really is and how her journey to venture a path that refuses to settle for social and gender divide, sexism and the like, unlocks a truth within her that changes her very existence – just when life couldn’t get any better. From start to finish, this riveting story of a young woman’s journey into the essence of who she was created to be brings a sense of self-reflection, as so much of Alicia’s world and series of events in some way or another can easily mirror our own.
 
 
 
On Human Dignity and Identity Observing International Human Rights Day
 

Recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world.” So begins the preamble of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted in 1948 by the UN General Assembly. The concept of human rights as laid out in the Declaration forms the cornerstone of liberal democracy. But it has been challenged by some who argue that unique historical experience and cultural, religious and civilizational traditions provide better ways to ensure human rights. Join in  for a conversation with Francis Fukuyama, Jacques Rupnik and Nicole Bibbins-Sedaca as they commemorate International Human Rights Day on December 10th from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.

 
 
 
Finding Yingying at O Cinema
 

Opening December 11, 2020: Yingying Zhang, a 26-year-old Chinese student, comes to the U.S. to study. In her detailed and beautiful diaries, the aspiring young scientist and teacher is full of optimism, hoping to also be married and a mother someday. Within weeks of her arrival, Yingying disappears from the campus. Through exclusive access to Yingying’s family and boyfriend, FINDING YINGYING closely follows their journey as they search to unravel the mystery of her disappearance and seek justice for their daughter while navigating a strange, foreign country. Zen and the Art of Finding One’s Muse on the Road 
 
This week, they’re striking up a virtual conversation with three artists spanning subjects, styles, and time zones. Meet photographer of Bahamian island life Alessandro Sarno (Milan), professional dog photographer Carlos Andres Cruz (Bogota), and eclectic muralist and graphic artist Ricardo Cavolo (Barcelona) — and join in our discussion of creative sparks, traveling as seeking, and finding artistic inspiration along the way.  These events are presented collaboratively by The Betsy Hotel, Florida International University, Miami Beach Urban Studios, and other community partners. Little Havana Social Club ¡en casa!
 
Little Havana Social Club ¡en casa! will bring home the sounds and spirit of the fiesta de barrio with a contemporary Miami touch. Rooted in tradition but also electric and cosmopolitan, the new monthly concert series Little Havana Social Club ¡en casa! will feature established artists such as Jahfe, Leslie Cartaya, and The Wizzards. Join in on December 17th from 9:00 to 10:00 p.m.  Little Havana Social Club ¡en casa! will weave the sweet swing of son into the rich history of Miami soul and R&B; surpise the audience with the unique atmosphere of Teatro Salvaje; mix ancient Afro-Venezuelan grooves and electronica; and tell us stories through the soul-flavored vocals of Keba or in the powerful poetry of Lyrical G from Guitars Over Guns. With the original artwork of Luis Valle aka El Chan Guri and hosted by the one-and only Latin Grammy nominated DJ and Producer Mr. Pauer, the Little Havana Social Club ¡en casa! series will air on Facebook @KoubekCenterMDC.
 
 
 
Art Blues Soul and BBQ Festival
 
The African Heritage Cultural Arts Center (AHCAC) celebrates the arts, sounds and flavors of Black Miami with the 4th annual “Art Blues Soul & BBQ Festival.” The presentation of this live recording will premiere on Saturday, December 19, 2020 online via the Center’s YouTube and Facebook live page.  This year’s concert is part of the Center’s 45th anniversary celebration featuring powerful performances by former students and teachers. Featured performances include R&B artists Courtney Mickens , Zipporah Hayes, Gia Wyre, and Blues vocalist Ja’Nia Harden of The Harden Project. Headlining the concert is Miami Blues legend and Sony Music recording artists Mojo Ike & Val.   The festival will be hosted by comedian Chello (BET’s Comicview) and will be recorded in the Center’s newly renovated courtyard. A special feature also includes student spotlight performances by AHCAC students Wesley Wray, Ciara Hutchins, and LeAsia Brown.
 
 
 
Freedom to Play by Jacqueline Gopie
 

Local Miami artist Jacqueline Gopie, introduces her latest collection, “Freedom to Play” at the Copper Door B&B. On December 18-20 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. daily, the Copper Door B&B will be hosting a reservation only, Meet & Greet with artist, Jacqueline Gopie along with refreshments. Painter Jacqueline Gopie was born in Kingston, Jamaica and now lives and works in Coral Gables, Florida. After a 22-year career in the United States Army, she began painting in 2002 when she attended the University of Miami where she earned her BFA in 2005 and MFA in 2012. Focusing on idyllic scenes of black and brown children enjoying seaside leisure and playtime she subversively challenges negative media stereotypes of people of color. Her intent is to rewire the viewer’s learned negative physiological response to racial differences by introducing and insisting upon alternative positive contexts, narratives and visual imagery.

The Heritage Project: Black Street Art + Black Lives Matter 

On December 16th at 5:30 p.m. Black Street Art + Black Lives Matter will focus on street art as a whole and how, by using different media, artists have been able to draw attention to imbalances within the social construct. This conversation will feature muralists, social artists and curators as they discuss the art form, its intersection with Black Lives Matter and how street art has been an important tool used to shed light on the gross number of Black lives lost at the hands of the police.

Brothers of Others features three multi-instrumentalists/lead singers who are passionate about authentic American music (blues, R&B and rock ’n’ roll). Deborah Cox: I’ll Be Home for Christmas

Miccosukee Indian Arts & Crafts Festival
 
Established in 1974 as the Tribe’s showcase festival, Indian Arts & Crafts has grown into a multicultural celebration of indigenous culture showcasing arts and crafts from Indian, Native American, Amerindian, First Nations and Aboriginal cultures of the Americas. Baila Little Havana! Con Marisol Blanco
 
Dancer and Master Instructor Marisol Blanco offers a weekly Afro-Cuban dance class that spans the history, songs, steps, beats, passion, mysticism, and intensity of Cuban folklore and culture. The course includes traditional ballroom dances such as the danzón, mambo, cha cha chá, pilón, mozambique, son and the casino. Marisol will also teach dances of the Afro-Cuban heritage such as rumba (in its various expressions: yambú, guaguancó and columbia); and of various ethnicities and African traditions including Yoruba (from the Orichas), Aará (Fodunes), Bantú (Mpungos) and also Haitian (Loaces). Classes are every Monday from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.
 
 
 
Negra by Randoplh Ward
 
The complexities of femininity, gender identity, and colorism come to the screen in a theatrical adaptation of Me Gritaron Negra by the Peruvian Mother of Dance Theater Victoria Santa Cruz. Negra, is a short dance film presented by international choreographer Randolph Ward in Partnership with Unity Coalition for the 2020 Celebrate Orgullo’s Virtual Festival and stars gender fluid Brazilian born artist Natanael Leal. The film takes viewers on a journey of self love and the confrontation getting to that journey. Negra premiered as part of Celebrate Orgullo's BlackOut Performances.  Click here to view Negra.

Kerry McLaney was born and raised in Port-au-Prince, Haiti where she discovered photography at a young age. She attended Savannah College of Art and Design and currently lives and works in Miami, FL. Her art practice involves various types of film and digital photography that focuses on the stillness in landscapes. This will be McLaney’s 5th solo exhibition.
ABOVE: Haiti was inspired by the Earth from Above series by Yann Arthus-Bertrand, a collection of aerial photographs from around the world in the 1990s. ABOVE: Haiti was shot over the course of two trips to Haiti and features images from various regions and provinces, including Port-au-Prince, Jacmel, Cap-Haitian and Grand Goave.  The exhibit can be viewed from December 2nd to February 3, 2021 @ 6:00 p.m. Click here to learn more.

 
 
 
The Doral Contemporary Art Museum (DORCAM) Presents: Manolo Valdés - The Legacy
 

The Doral Contemporary Art Museum (DORCAM) presents 'Manolo Valdés - The Legacy,' an outdoor exhibition of monumental sculptures by this world-renowned Contemporary Art Master. In partnership with the City of Doral, the monumental sculptures will be installed in the main public parks of the City of Doral as well as other selected locations. This showcase will be the largest exhibition of his epic sculptures to date and will be on view until June 2021. Click here for more information.

 
 
 
Meet the Curator of Remaking Miami: Josefina Tarafa's Photographs of the 1970s
 
Scholar and guest curator José Antonio Navarrete speaks about the remarkable work of Josefina Tarafa, a prominent Cuban exile, photographer and philanthropist who captured Miami's profound transformation during the 1970s with exceptional documentary photographs.  "Josefina was ahead of her time," Navarrete says. "She was one of the first people to explore the relationship between immigration and culture." Watch the interview to learn more about Remaking Miami, the first exhibition ever dedicated to Josefina Tarafa's fascinating photography, opening November 5 at the Cuban Legacy Gallery.
