In 2008, while working on a newspaper story with fellow Miami Herald journalist Leonard Pitts Jr., Juste captured the image of Memphis sanitation worker Elmore Nickelberry and his son, Terence, holding placards reading “I Am A Man.” These signs became emblematic of Black Americans’ struggles after being carried during the Memphis Sanitation Workers’ Strike in 1968. The MBC Interactive Archive is currently available online!

Discover the black experience in America and the powerfully significant contributions of African American filmmakers through decades of film history, via the MBC archive. From the first years of cinema, black filmmakers have been invaluable to the cultural fabric that makes up American film history and important voices in the struggles and problems in our society. Over decades lessons have been learned from these contributions, but continuing setbacks and deep flaws continue to prove the value of the works defining African American stories.  The archive is a work in progress and it continues to grow through many stages. Coming soon is the 1970s, an important decade of black history in America which included many works by independent African American filmmakers, blaxploitation and the L. A. Rebellion.  Click here for further details.
